Denali Education Center has gotten a lot of mileage out of a recent Tier 1 grant from the Rasmuson Foundation. The grant was received in 2013, but work to the iconic Sheldon Center couldn’t be completed until this spring. Work began last fall when the ageing, leaky roof on the building was replaced. Now, the new Alaskan birch floor is almost complete. “The Sheldon Center has never had a floor,” said Jill Boelsma, Operations Director. “The plywood sub-floor has been painted numerous times over the past 16 years. A hardwood floor makes the most sense in the subarctic; it can withstand the deep cold in winter and freeze/thaw cycles in fall and spring,” she said. “The new floor transforms the room…it’s warmer, bigger and more stable!”
