Open Call For Artists: Migrations, Libations: A Celebration of Spring
Begin your artistic journey into summer with a group art show at the Denali Education Center! Pieces should reflect a sense of migration and must be hung on the walls. All media is encouraged, especially writers who wish to share thoughts and stories about migration.
The show will kick off with an artist’s reception on Thursday, May 28 at 7:00 p.m. and will be on display through Friday, June 12. The “Migrations, Libations” theme was created to coincide with the wine tasting fundraiser with the same name, set for Friday, May 29 at 7:00 p.m. Additionally, there is an Artisan and Farmer’s Market set for Saturday, May 30 from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Share your art with the community for three fabulous events in a row!
Works can be available for sale during these events, and for the duration of the show with a percentage of sales benefiting community programs and new initiatives at Denali Education Center.

DEC Program Participants Assist with Sweetclover Research Project
Berry season is fast approaching and we couldn’t be more excited! Last season, our program participants spent weeks crawling all over the tundra. Instead of gathering sweet fruit, however, they were busy collecting important data for the Melibee Project research team . Under the guidance of Denali Education Center Field Educator Margi Dashevsky, our citizen scientists participated in an investigation looking at the recent sweetclover invasion and its possible affects on the pollination of wild Alaskan bog blueberries and lowbush cranberries. Researchers are using the data to build mathematical models to predict the phenological phase of sweetclover, cranberry, and blueberry across the state of Alaska. Check out the Melibee Citizen Science Newsletter to learn more about this exciting project! Melibee citizen science newsletter 2013

The Carper Family Performs at the Charles Sheldon Center
The Carper Family packed the house on Friday, June 13th and put on a show unlike any other here at the Charles Sheldon Center! It has been four years since the Austin-based trio of Melissa Carper (upright bass), Beth Chrisman (fiddle), and Jenn Miori (guitar) has brought their music to Alaska, but they were welcomed back by an energetic crowd of locals and visitors alike. They shook the room and brought the crowd to their feet with their signature harmonies and bluegrass, old time country, and swing tunes. Thank you Carper Family for helping us officially break in our new floor with all that dancing and boot stompin’!
And, thank you to The Carper Family for generously donating a set of their three cds and a bumper sticker to this year’s 20th Annual Auction. If you missed the show and chance to get your hands on their merchandise, come by and put in your bid on Saturday, August 2nd.
